MY TO DO LIST

I’ve got a list of things to do.

Things that must be done. I’m not the only one. Not the only crazy fool keeping lists. You’ve got one too, we all have.

Whether you keep yours in some cutting edge app on your phone, or in a trusted notebook or just scribbled on a series of dog-eared Post It notes - you’ve got a list.

Mine is a work in progress. Most days I add more stuff to my list than I take off it.


THERE’S A SIMPLE, SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION FOR THIS, AND I’LL HAPPILY EXPLAIN IT TO YOU...


It’s MUCH easier to think of something that needs to be done than it is to actually do it.

A half-way house is to record the thought. To write it down someplace, that way, it almost feels like you’ve made some progress with the task.

You haven’t, of course. But it’s easy to fool ourselves into feeling productive.

The ultimate to-do list buzz is to decant one list into another. To take a pile of paper scraps and envelope backs and spend some time sorting your to do list.

Maybe you’ll move it into a new notebook and use your neatest handwriting. Maybe you’ll try Trello or Evernote.

Doesn’t it feel productive, this sorting out of tasks?

Even though the actual output, in terms of useful productivity, is actually zero. Nothing.

I’m not preaching from up high here. This isn’t some holier than thou sermon.

I’m not going to share my top 12 tips and tricks for getting stuff done, or the 8 productivity secrets of the super successful.


THAT’S THE SORT OF THING THAT YOU’LL FIND YOURSELF READING WHEN YOU SHOULD BE DOING STUFF.


When you’re procrastinating. Doing anything other than the stuff that you should be doing.

Read those articles on your own time. They all say the same things anyway.

[SPOILER ALERT: get up earlier, don’t multi-task, and divide your day into 20 minute chunks]

I’m not here I’m going to share my magical productivity hacks with you, I wake up late, try to do 3 or 4 things at once and love nothing more than a long meeting, as long as there are comfortable chairs and chocolate biscuits.

I’ve only got one piece of advice for you. But it’s a really good one.

This piece of advice knocks ‘wake up earlier’ into a cocked hat.

And it’s proven. I’ve been doing it for years, and it really works.

Here’s what I do:

I find someone else to do the work for me.

No joke.

It’s what I do. I’ve got a great team, and it’s a good job too, because without them, not much would get done.

As well as just being too damn good at procrastination, one of the things that holds most of us back from making rapid progress on our to-do lists is simple…

...we don’t know how to do everything on there.

Some stuff is complicated. We need to look stuff up, watch a couple of how to videos on YouTube, but then we get caught up watching videos of other people doing stuff, and then suddenly it’s time for bed.

Finding other people who can make stuff happen is the key.

I had a problem with my DKIM records the other day. It would have taken me all day to fix it because I don’t know what a DKIM record is or where we keep ours, so I simply asked someone that would know what they were doing to fix or for me.

Et voila, problem solved, task ticked off.

The problem is trusting someone enough to let them within a country mile of your task list, because sorting the fallout from some clueless Colins’ efforts to get your work done is going to take longer than actually doing the work yourself, and a LOT longer than not doing the work at all.

Again, I’ve rolled a couple of sixes. we’ve got a broad range of skills on the team, so we’ve got serious capability to get stuff done.

If it’s not important, strike it from the list.

If it’s staying, ask yourself question two.
